The IES Illumination Award for Outdoor Lighting Design for the MOCAPE
Citation for Artful Illumination of a Unique Glass Envelope Responsive to the Architecture
The Outdoor Lighting Design Award by the Illuminating Engineering Society (New York, USA) recognizes excellence in lighting design and application in all aspects of exterior lighting. The program celebrates achievements in aesthetics, applied technical acumen, creative solutions to demanding site conditions and advancements to the industry in outdoor lighting applications. The goal of the program is to further the understanding, knowledge and function of outdoor lighting as a critical aspect of the built environment.
COOP HIMMELB(L)AU worked with AG Licht to create "Artful Illumination of a unique Glass Envelope Responsive to the Architecture" for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE).
The project combines two independent yet structurally unified institutions: The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Planning Exhibition (PE). The exterior skin consists of an outer layer of perforated metal panels and the actual climate envelope made from insulated glass. Due to the building’s unusual shape, a two-dimensional drawing could not express the design in a complete and precise way. Therefore, the team used BIM for lighting design and made revisions in real time by 3D VR , updating the design in concert with updates to the architecture and curtain wall design. Ultimately, the skillful installation and hiding of lamps led to evenly distributed interior lighting that adds to the mystery and arouses the visitor’s desire for exploration.
