ÖSTERREICHISCHER BAU-PREIS for Dalian International Conference Center
On October 18, 2011 the ÖSTERREICHISCHER BAU-PREIS was granted for the fourth time in the Tech Gate Vienna. With a total trophy money of 200.000€ it is the highest endowed award in this section in Austria.
The “Immobilien Privatstiftung” (Private Real Estate Trust) recognizes therewith “innovative and economically applicable solutions in the field of architecture, construction planning, structural and building services engineering.”
The jury with representatives from the fields of architecture and civil engineering selected in a two stage selection process the laureates. This year there are four categories for the ÖSTERREISCHER BAU-PREIS, which is awarded every two years:
Export of services in design and engineering, reasearch and development, organizations and networks, as well as scholarships for young academics whose academic research is linked to building and real estate.
COOP HIMMELB(L)AU convinced the jury in the category “Export of services in design and engineering” with the project “Dalian International Conference Center”, which uses the resources wind, seawater and light in a clever way so as to produce more energy than it consumes.
The jury found:
"With the submission of this project COOP HIMMEB(L)AU illustrates impressively that and to what extent services by Austrian planners are high in demand internationally and leave sustainable high-quality marks abroad. The design achievement of the studio secures a successful urban integration of the enormous building volume and the creation of a landmark which is significant for the marketing of the city.”
The building, under construction since the end of 2008, will be completed in summer 2012.
Design-principal and CEO Wolf D. Prix gave thanks for the award saying: “BAU-PREIS – it’s fantastic, that COOP HIMMELB(L)AU received the BAU-PREIS, although we have been saying already for the past 20 years that it’s not HIMMELBLAU (sky blue), but rather HIMMELBAU (sky building). Thus we’ve waited 20 years and now we pick up the award – and even for a great project.”
